Masking Unleashed

Hi everyone! Welcome back to another day of card techniques. Today we will look at masking to create a scene. Let’s jump right in to this card.

First, using the Altenew All the Hearts die, I die cut a heart from masking paper. Then, using the negative piece, I taped it down to a white cardstock panel cut to 3 3/4″ by 5″. Then, I ink blended Altenew Amethyst ink over the opening of the masking paper. After that, in the middle of the heart, I stamped the “You Inspire Me” stamp from the Altenew Penned Rose stamp set. Next, using the Altenew Vintage Flowers stamp set, I chose one of the itty bitty flowers and a smaller flower to tamp on top of the inked heart. Beginning with the solid layers, I stamped each of the small flowers in Altenew Artic ink. I randomly stamped these around the heart while the negative masking paper was still on my card panel. Next, using Altenew Persian Blue ink, I stamped the second layer. For the itty bitty flowers, there was a third layer, which I stamped using Altenew Sapphire ink. For the center dots of each flower, I stamped those using Altenew Sunkissed ink. I let this panel dry for a bit.

Next, I cut a top-folding card base to 4 1/4″ by 5 1/2″. Then, I cut a small mat out of black cardstock to 4″ by 5 1/4″. I glued the black mat to the front of the card base. After that, I removed the negative mask from the stamped panel. I placed the positive heart die cut mask on top of the heart stamping to protect it from the next stamping. Still using Altenew Vintage Flowers stamp set, I took one of the larger flowers. I stamped the layering flower two times, one on each side of the heart. For the solid layer, I stamped this using Altenew Amethyst ink. Next, the second flower layer was stamped with Altenew Grape Agate ink. So that I could somewhat tie in the blue from the flowers stamped in the heart, but still match the purple hue of the flowers, I chose to stamp the third layer using Altenew Andromeda ink. This has a bluish-purple hue.

Before stamping the leaves, I created two flower masks and a leaf mask by stamping the solid layers onto masking paper and fussy cut those out. This stamp set comes with a coordinating die set; however, when you are masking a flower, it is best to cut around it so that you can cut a little inside the stamped line. This will help the leaves to be stamped exactly at the edge of the flower without having a small gap. Once the flower masks were cut out and placed over the stamped flowers, I took the larger leaf cluster and stamped the solid layer around each flower four times using Altenew Frayed Leaf ink. Next, I stamped the second layer of the leaves using Altenew Forest Glades ink and the third layer using Altenew Evergreen ink. It makes the stamping go much faster if you stamp each leaf with the same layer.

Now was the time to take off the masks! I removed the heart mask and the flower masks and loved how it turned out. I wanted a little bit of sparkle on the card, so I cut two tiny strips of silver glitter paper and glued it around the bottom of the heart. I finished the card by stamping above the heart the “Dear Friend” stamp from the Altenew Thinking of You stamp set.
