Color Your Day

Hello! Welcome back to another day of card making! In today’s post, we are going to explore color and a great formula for using color in our cards. I took the Altenew Educator course called Color Your Day. In this class, I learned all sorts of tips and techniques when choosing colors to use on my cards. She gave a great formula to use when selecting your color pieces. I learned to use the 70 / 20 / 10 rule. That means seventy-percent of the card could use a focal color, twenty-percent a secondary color, and the final ten-percent a pop of color. The other tips from this class I used in my card are the following: using neutrals to go with vibrant colors, keeping the color choices simple and only using a few, and using small embellishments or silver Nuvo drops to add light color.

Let’s get into how I created this card. First, I cut a gray, neutral card base to be a top folding 4 1/4″ by 5 1/2″ base. Next, I knew I wanted to use teal as my focal point, so I cut a 4″ by 5 1/4″ panel from teal cardstock. I stamped it with a teal ink using the Altenew Pattern Play: Diamond background stamp set. Next, I used two oval infinity dies and cut out the oval in the center of the teal cardstock panel. To cut it, I placed the larger oval in the middle of the card. Then, I taped the smaller oval in the center of the larger over. I die cut it and removed the small frame created between the large oval and the smaller one. After that, I die cut four more smaller ovals to create dimension for the back of the teal patterned oval in the center of the card. I glued all smaller ovals together and set aside to dry. I glued the teal stamped panel to the front of the card base. Then, I glued the smaller teal oval in the middle of the oval opening. I turned it around so that the pattern would be nearly matching that of the panel.

As this portion was drying, I stamped the congratulations sentiment from the Altenew All the Hearts stamp set onto black cardstock using Versamark Ink. After that, I poured silver glitter embossing powder over it and heat set it. I cut four more strips of black cardstock and glued to the back of the sentiment strip to create dimension. Then, I glued the sentiment to the middle of the oval. I held down each end to make the sentiment create a little arc.

Finally, I stamped my flowers using the Altenew Vintage Roses stamp set. I used the larger roses from this layering stamp set to create five roses. For the base layer, I used Altenew Pink Diamonds ink. For the second layer, I stamped it with Altenew Pinkalicious ink. Finally, I finished the roses using Altenew Rubellite ink. These inks pair so well together to create a beautiful vintage rose. I die cut each flower using the coordinating Altenew Vintage Roses die set. As I started placing the roses around the middle frame, I realized five roses of this size was too cluttered. I went with three roses and felt it was exactly what the card needed. I placed two at the top and one at the bottom. Since the card was teal, I decided to not create leaves and just leave the flowers as they were. I finished it off with a few silver glitter Nuvo drops to create my own embellishments.

I loved making this cute card and since it was so easy to create, I will use this as a base card and just change the sentiments to have a variety of cards on hand. Let me know what you thought about this card in the comments. As always, thanks so much for stopping by today!
