Colors can make us feel so much. Have you ever noticed when people are sad, they describe it as blue or gray? Pinks and reds tend to represent happiness and love. For this next class I took from Altenew Educator Certification Program, it was all about the mood for color. There were several techniques I took from this class such as creating an emboss resist, using watercolor paper to do ink blending, using thin strips of cardstock to add interest, angling sentiment strips, and using gray to blend with the rest of the color scheme.
As much as I love gray, I should use it more often as a balancing color. I knew I wanted to use a shade of pink as my main color. I cut a top-folding bright pink cardstock base to 4 1/4inches by 5 1/2 inches. Next, I cut a gray cardstock panel to 4 inches by 5 1/4 inches and glued that to the card base. I went searching through my scraps box to find a pink strip to add to the side of the card to create some interest. I was in luck by finding a pink glitter strip. I cut this glitter strip to 1/2 an inch by 5 1/4 inches. I cut a few other white scraps to the same size as this strip and glued those to the back in order to create a dimension. I really like this tip learned from the class and plan to use these small strips on future cards.
When thinking about a cluster of flowers or a main focal image, my mind went to the Altenew Kind Reminders stamp and die sets. It showcases large single flowers with clusters of leaves. I chose the longer flower because I wanted it to go on the left side of the card partially over the glitter strip. To create the emboss resist, I stamped the flower image on water color paper using Versamark Invisible Ink. I poured gold embossing powder over it and heat set the image. I used my Altenew Watercolor Essential 12-pan set to color in the flower with the pinkish shade. Using the Altenew Watercolor brush with water, I lightly painted over the entire flower with the pink. Then, I added more of the same pink over a few areas to create shadows. I painted the center a third time to give it a darker tone, and then went around the flower to add the same color to deepen the shadows. I dabbed a few little specks of the black in the middle of the flower, but realized I did not like how stark it looked compared to the rest of the flower. I muted it down by dabbing off some of the color with a paper towel and going back over it in the same pink color.
After painting the flower, I used the lightest green in the watercolor set and followed the same process of painting all the leaves lightly. I continued the process of going back over the leaves and creating dimension with the color giving it a darker tone closest to the flower where the shadows would fall. Once I finished the leaves, I dried the image using my heating tool. After that, I die cut the image using the coordinating Altenew Kind Reminders Die.
Moving on to finishing the card, I used a permanent glue tape runner on the portion of the flower that I knew would be covering the glitter strip. Generally, I find it easier to adhere images and other things to glitter by using the permanent glue tape runner instead of liquid glue. Remember that I stacked about four scrap pieces of cardstock to the back of the sentiment strip, so I knew I would need to use a thinner dimensional foam tape for the portion of the flower that would not cover the glitter strip. After adding the dimensional foam tape, I adhered the flower to the left side of the card, partially covering the glitter strip. In the bottom right corner, I stamped the sentiment using the same Altenew Kind reminders stamp set using Altenew Permanent Black ink. I added a few pink iridescent sequins to finish the card.
